The next major Games Done Quick event, January’s Awesome Games Done Quick, will be an online-only event after the show’s organisers released a statement saying, “We do not believe [Florida] is a safe place for our community,” in light of the state’s putrid policies towards Covid and marginalised individuals.

For the past week, Games Done Quick has held its annual speedrunning festival. As always, the event has been awesome, full of some truly mind-blowing feats, including an exploit-packed run through Halo Infinite’s open-world-ish campaign. But organizers appear to have saved the best for last, with a truly stacked lineup slated for tomorrow, the event’s final night.

Prolific and experienced Dark Souls speedrunner Distortion2 continues to set new speedrunning records in Elden Ring. He has now beaten Elden Ring in under 37 minutes, which could possibly be the new record for the fastest completion time.

Elden Ring has been out for nearly two weeks now and, if you’re anything like me, you’re still making your way through the expansive gothic world of the Lands Between. Not everyone is taking their leisurely time with the game, though, as one speedrunner ripped through FromSoftware’s action-RPG in just two-and-a-half hours…without dying a single time! Color me jealous.

They say necessity is the mother of invention, so when speedrunning Super Mario Odyssey became “too easy” for Twitch streamer DougDoug he decided to spice things up by making the game’s heads-up display get progressively… uh, worse the longer he played.

And just like that, somehow it’s been a whole year since the last Awesome Games Done Quick. The speedrunning event, back for its 13th year, starts today. After a terrible 2021, relax and enjoy some fun, impressive, and wild speedruns for the next week. It might just be the best way to kick off 2022. And all of this is for charity, too!

Speedrun, a website where leaderboards crown the fastest players for any given game, recently added a commenting feature which hasn’t been going well for anyone. Since its implementation, users have been spammed with vulgar comments and inappropriate images. Worse, those plagued by this problem can’t moderate the garbage. As a result, some speedrunners and moderators on the site went on a strike.

The Summer Games Done Quick 2021 schedule is now out, and I’m so excited. Taking place from July 4-11, the online speedrunner charity event will feature over 100 full-tilt sprints through games famous and obscure, with the proceeds raised going to Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières.
