Loot River devs “messed up” but will work to improve game, add actual loot

Loot River, the pixely roguelike with a bit of Souls and a bit of Tetris, is all about making multiple attempts to navigate weird dungeons made of moving platforms, before dying and starting again. It’s one of those games that’s perfect for Game Pass, at least in its current form, but that’s going to be changing in a small bit, according to a post devs Straka Studio made yesterday. Straka note they are a small team who playtested with a very small group, and didn’t realise the game would be unwelcoming to newcomers. In fact, they’ve already made some smaller…

RPS@PAX 2022: Cursed To Golf dev tells us exactly what’s up with all the wacky golf games recently

Recently, we asked what’s the deal with all the wacky golf games coming out this year? Well, we thought we better answer that question by going straight to the source. While we were out at PAX East 2022, we tracked down the director of upcoming roguelike Cursed To Golf, Liam Edwards. As well as asking him about the enduring appeal of sunny green fairways, we also putted our way through its excellent PAX East demo, discovering this golflike is anything but cursed. Read more

Vampire Survivors’ creator just wanted something to play at the weekend

2D bullet hell game Vampire Survivors is surely one of the most interesting success stories of the year, as what was a simple mobile game became popular almost overnight. Its very minimalistic roguelike style captured players looking for something casual, but still engrossing. You pick one of several characters and move them around the screen as they auto-attack. As enemies are disposed of the player levels up, along with changing weapons and gaining power-ups, with the ultimate goal being to keep the ever growing mob of enemies under control. On death you unlock new weapons and characters by spending coins…

ORX’s compelling mix of deckbuilding and tower defence is 100% my jam

Medieval city builders that pit you against enormous waves of enemies are clearly having a bit of a moment right now. In the last few months alone, we’ve endured the cursed nights of Age Of Darkness: Final Stand, called down sky lasers on the hordes of Diplomacy Is Not An Option, and now we’ve got ORX, a dark fantasy tower defence game that blows all of them out of their ditch water moats with its compelling mix of deckbuilding and real-time strategy. It’s not out in full just yet, but its demo got a substantial update this week, adding more…

Roguebook has me struggling to choose between what’s smart and and what’s fun

At first, me and Roguebook got along swimmingly. It’s the best roguelike deckbuilder since Monster Train, which isn’t to say it’s nearly as good, but is to say I anticipated playing it for dozens of hours. It’s got a nifty take on exploration, solid combat, and adorable raccoons who load other raccoons into cannons. It’s also got optional fights where you laboriously beat money out of golden fairy orbs, however, and these have spoiled the entire game for me. I’m unlikely to go back unless they’re tweaked, because my stupid brain can’t tolerate either passing up boring yet strategically wise…

Muck: dying and respawning | Can you respawn in Muck?

By Rebecca Jones 7 June 2021 17:04 GMT Muck is a survival-roguelike with optional multiplayer, developed based on a dare from a YouTube commenter. Yes, really.Watch on YouTubeIt’s a simple yet strangely addictive indie game with shades of Minecraft and Fortnite. But what can you do if you die in the game? Can you respawn in Muck?Muck features three need bars: Health, Hunger, and Stamina. If your character’s Health depletes to zero, they will die. This is a survival-roguelike, so death is pretty serious business. Dying in single-player causes the World to reset. As such, there is no way to respawn in…

Looks like Hades might be coming to PS4 soon

By Dom Peppiatt 16 May 2021 14:46 GMT It looks like Hades might be set to arrive on PS4 soon, at least that’s if a rating seen over on Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee is to be believed.First spotted on ResetEra, the new rating for Supergiant Games’ immensely popular and horny-as-hell roguelite seems to suggest the game is set for launch on PS4 (and therefore PS5 via backwards compatibility) soon.Neither Supergiant nor Sony has confirmed that the game is coming to the platform yet, but we’ve seen the Korea Game Rating and Administration listings prove to be correct more…

Loot River is an island-shifting roguelike and it looks rather cool

By Stephany Nunneley, Saturday, 27 March 2021 13:41 GMT Slovakia-based developer has announced a really cool-looking title called Loot River. Described as Dark Souls meets Tetris, Loot River is coming to Xbox and PC. Announced yesterday during the Xbox Indie Twitch showcase, the game is an island-shifting action-roguelike set in a series of procedurally-generated labyrinths. In it, you can expect real-time combat and dark fantasy stylings mixed with spatial block-shifting puzzles.Armed with the power of a Relic, you can shift the ground beneath, and slide floating ruins together in a series of tile puzzles. As you venture through the…

One of Hades’ most-hated characters was almost its protagonist

A quick history lesson about Supergiant Games’ Hades reveals that Theseus was very nearly the hero of the game, rather than its most notable villain.Hades has become something of a superhit, with the roguelike action game enjoying at least 1,000,000 sales across PC and Nintendo Switch to date. The game quickly became one of the highest-rated titles of the year after a stealth launch via a Nintendo Direct Mini back in September 2020.Since then, it’s dominated the gaming conversation thanks to its likable cast, addictive gameplay loop, and impressive writing. But we very nearly saw one of the game’s most widely reviled characters star in…
