It found, unsurprisingly, that stress, sleep problems, burnout and social phobia anxiety may all adversely impact esports players’ mental health. The study – carried out by researchers from the University of Chichester in collaboration with the University of Winchester and King’s College London – surveyed 313 student esports players who play either CSGO, Valorant or Rainbow Six Siege….

New pro player study explores stress and coping in League of Legends, and the idea of using ‘positive stress’ as a motivator to perform

A new piece of research has explored the impact of stress on League of Legends pro players, and the coping strategies they employ to handle them. The report, published by the International Journal of Esports, consists of interviews with 12 Master to Challenger players who earn their main source of income through competing in esports. They described experiencing stressors regarding competition in five main areas: performance expectations, internal evaluation, team issues, audience/social media and environmental constraints. Three quarters of women disguise their gender to avoid sexual harassment when gaming online, while 25% stop playing due to abuse

Three quarters (76%) of female gamers have disguised their gender while gaming, according to new research published on International Women’s Day 2022 today. FandomSpot.com, a platform for fandoms and online communities, surveyed 2,000 female gamers across the world to discover common behaviours of women whilst gaming. This followed the release of US statistics which found that women accounted for 45% of gamers in the US in 2021. Of those who have admitted to disguising their gender, it was revealed that 93% of women did so due to experiencing sexual harassment online. Almost 70% of UK parents believe esports can play a positive role in school, but only 32% are happy for their child to have a career in it, finds new education survey by Dell and Intel

Parents in the UK are warming to the benefits of esports in general, but aren’t yet convinced of the career possibilities for their children. That’s according to new research from OnePoll, commissioned by Dell Technologies and Intel, which surveyed 1,500 UK parents with children who play esports and 500 financial decision makers in education such as headteachers, CIOs and department heads.  The results show that over two-thirds (69%) of UK parents believe esports allows their children to develop skills that they might not get through traditional education methods. For all its drama, smack-talking and screaming at LANs, Counter-Strike is apparently the most calming esports shooter out there. That’s according to a new study from human biology and psychology researchers at the University of Leeds, which investigated the physiological effects of stress related to gaming. The study by the UK university, commissioned by BetVictor, focused on popular FPS and battle royale games including Apex Legends, CSGO, Call of Duty Warzone and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). UK-based esports organisations, startups and scaleup companies raised £42m in 2020, making it a record year for UK esports startups in terms of both the value and number of deals.  That’s according to new research published this week by Here East, the tech and innovation campus in London, and Beauhurst, a UK database for fast-growth companies. The pair claim to have analysed all investment data for British esports since 2011. Growing UK esports businesses have raised £138m over the last ten years, and the research has found that 61% (£85m) of that investment was secured in the last two years.  Continue…
