Esports fans in the UK warming to cryptocurrency, finds YouGov report

New YouGov research shows purchase intent of cryptocurrency among esports fans in the UK has ‘substantially increased’ in the past 12 months. Esports fans who say they are very likely, likely or somewhat likely to use cryptocurrency in the next year has increased by ten points – equating to a 21% increase (47% in 2021 vs 57% in 2022). The publisher also outlined plans for ‘harsher punishments’ and talked about its hopes to roll out real-time text moderation in the game, beyond automatic text detection, in response to toxic player behaviour. UK esports organisation Motif fold after women’s Valorant team report incidents of racism and sexual harassment

Motif Esports, a small UK esports organisation that participated in Valorant and Rocket League, have disbanded after their women’s Valorant team, Violet, suffered alleged abuse within the org. Two of the women, Czech Republic player Rebecca and Scottish player Joanne, shared their experiences in Twitlonger posts here and here respectively. Parents in the UK are warming to the benefits of esports in general, but aren’t yet convinced of the career possibilities for their children. That’s according to new research from OnePoll, commissioned by Dell Technologies and Intel, which surveyed 1,500 UK parents with children who play esports and 500 financial decision makers in education such as headteachers, CIOs and department heads.  The results show that over two-thirds (69%) of UK parents believe esports allows their children to develop skills that they might not get through traditional education methods. Guild Esports makes education move after posting a loss in its first full year of operations, wants to be ‘the largest provider of school-based learning for esports through 2022’

Guild Esports, the UK-based esports organisation linked with David Beckham, has outlined some new education-based plans in a new financial report published this morning. The company generated revenues of £1.9m during its first full financial year (from October 1st 2020 to September 30th 2021), but posted a loss before tax of £8.8m (up from £2.7m made the year prior). Guild’s non-executive chairman Derek Lew said the loss “reflects a major investment in operational infrastructure, esports teams, the Guild Academy, content creation and the development of Guild merchandising”, an investment that he says is “fundamental to Guild’s business model and long-term strategy”….
