Forget about Scalebound and Bayonetta 3, Platinum should be working on a Vanquish sequel

Why this criminally underrated shooter should share the spotlight with Platinum’s finest After rocket-sliding toward an enemy, you kickflip off them to chain multiple mid-air headshots. Then, you toss a grenade at a sniper nest, vaulting over cover to detonate the explosive with a well-timed bullet. An answering rocket barrage sends you sliding along the ground as missiles fly overhead, swapping out to a sniper rifle to pull off a trickshot in transit. All of which takes place in slow-motion, of course. It’s been almost 12 years, and you’d still be hard-pushed to find a third-person shooter that looks as…

Babylon’s Fall combines crispy combat with the Destiny power grind

Katharine and I went hands-on with Babylon’s Fall last week, that online action RPG by PlatinumGames which falls in and out of memory as the years tick by. Still, when an invitation to the third phase of its ongoing closed beta test arrived, I couldn’t help but get excited. These are the folks behind NieR: Automata and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, after all, and now they’re making a live-service, co-op slasher. Sign. Me. Up. As it stands, the closed beta only showed a very small, very early build of the game, but we’ve got some thoughts. Combat, exploration, and co-op…

Platinum Games has interest in bringing Star Fox Zero to Switch, but it’s up to Nintendo

If you click on a link and make a purchase we may receive a small commission. Read our editorial policy. Platinum would need Nintendo’s okay to release and update the Wii U game. In an interview with VGC, Platinum Games studio head Atsushi Inaba said that there’s interest at the studio to revisit the Wii U’s Star Fox Zero for a Switch rerelease. “It’s unfortunate that people aren’t able to play older games because they’re locked out of the platform, so of course if possible we’d like to bring over any of those older titles to the newer platforms.” Inaba’s…

Bayonetta 3 “still exists” and development is “progressing well”

By Stephany Nunneley 19 June 2021 18:57 GMT Another E3, another Bayonetta 3 no-show. It’s getting rather depressing. But don’t worry lovelies: Bayonetta 3 is still in development and things are progressing nicely.Watch on YouTubeThat’s according to Nintendo’s Bill Trinen and Nate Bihldorff speaking in an interview with Gamespot.“I can definitely confirm it still exists,” said Bihlfroff.“I will even go one further and say that not only does it exist, but it’s progressing well,” added Trinen. “We like to show things when we’re ready to show them, and certainly, we like to show things when the developer is ready to show…

Nier: Automata is finally getting a patch on Steam

As much as I adore Nier: Automata (degree: a lot), I cannot deny the PC version is a bit bum and has been since it launched four years ago. It’s daft that we’ve had to use a fan-made fix to run it in the correct resolution or stop cutscenes stuttering. Square Enix did us dirty. But oh my giddy aunt, the stars have aligned and today they finally announced an “upgrade patch” for the post-apocalyptic RPG’s Steam version. Presumably with the fixes from the recent Microsoft Store edition? Read more

Platinum announce arcade shmup Sol Cresta, maybe not as a joke this time

After announcing retro-styled shoot ’em up Sol Cresta as an April Fool’s joke last year, Bayonetta devs PlatinumGames have used this April Fool’s Day to… announce retro-styled shoot ’em up Sol Cresta? Supposedly for really reals this time? A collaboration with Hamster Corporation, it’s inspired by 80s shmups Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta, and supposedly launching this year. For real. Maybe. April Fool’s Day is bad. Read more

Nier Automata players review-bomb it on Steam to demand a better port

Square Enix’s mistakes with the original PC release of Nier Automata are coming back to haunt it.Last week, Nier Automata – alongside an assortment of games – came to PC Game Pass. Shortly after the game went live, players discovered something very curious: this isn’t the same PC port on sale on Steam.Usually, that just means the Windows Store version is limited in some ways, but this is one of the rare occasions where the Game Pass version is actually superior to one on Steam. It turns out, this is a completely different port.Reports of improved performance, proper windowed full…

Nier: Automata’s final secret has been discovered

Nier: Automata is a secretive enough game already, I gather, what with its multiple endings and unpredictable story and all. Apparently there’s still been one pesky secret to uncover, as teased by the developers themselves, which one clever player has finally managed to uncover after hours of work. 2B officially has nothing left to hide. Have You Played… NieR: Automata?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. I don’t often replay games, and if I do, it is because they are good. To complete NieR: Automata, you need to replay the game three times. Normally, I’d hate a game’s guts for doing this to me, but you know what? I’d do it three more times for NieR: Automata (actually, maybe not because it is quite long, but let’s go along with the idea that I would). (more…)
