UK esports organisations LDN UTD and Viperio have joined the platform, as have Irish org Katana Gaming. They’re also joined by Dutch org and FIFA academy Team Gullit, which is owned by football legend Ruud Gullit, and the four newcomers join JLingz Esports, which launched a Recast channel last year. You can grab Rayman Origins for free on PC right now

One of my absolute favourite platformers, Rayman Origins, is free to keep on Ubisoft Connect right now. Ubisoft are giving the 2D side-scroller away as part of their 35th anniversary celebrations, which is wonderful news. It’s one of the best co-op games I’ve played, so it’s a perfectly timed freebie if you’re in need of something to keep friends and family entertained over the holiday period. Read more

Blasphemous final free content update sets up the sequel

The third and final big free content update for Blasphemous launched this morning, introducing new levels, bosses, and more. Named ‘Wounds Of Eventide’ (love a few wounds with my Catholocism), the update brings the story to a point that the upcoming sequel will pick up. Here, come watch the trailer to meet some of the new monsters, including a giant snake. No room for subtlety here. Read more

Solar Ash review – burns bright and fizzles out

Do you ever notice when you have a perfect walk? You’re going somewhere (taking the kids to school, heading into town, nipping to the local shop) and when you arrive you realise that you had flow. You never stopped moving. You didn’t have to stop and wait for traffic in order to cross the road. No kids on bikes forced you into a bush. There was no need to take evasive action from someone who clearly didn’t get the memo about Covid. It was a seamless, silky smooth walk. At its best, Solar Ash is that walk. It’s just a…

They Always Run review: a 2D space-western with some rough edges

They Always Run is the closest I’ve come to living out my dream of being a galactic bounty hunter. It’s a 2D platformer with two distinct halves to its gameplay. One portion is a rewarding parkour simulator, and the other’s this heavy, visceral combat system that I never got tired of. You play as a three-armed mutant called Aiden as he hops between planets collecting bounties, which are presented through a series of action-platformer linear levels. It almost never goes as planned. The title’s pretty accurate. Read more

As part of their 35th birthday celebrations, Ubisoft are now giving away the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles trilogy free for keepsies on PC. You have until Friday to claim your copies of the spin-offs, which converted AssCreed’s sneak-o-murdering into 2.5D side-scrolling platformers. They told stories of three different assassins in China, India, and Russia across several hundred years, with art styles inspired by their setting. And right now they’re free. Read more

Demon Turf is a deceptively deep 3D platformer that N64 fans should love

If you’re after pure gameplay depth and challenge, don’t ignore this retro-inspired gem. The 3D platformer is dead, or so I’ve heard at least once a year since around the time of the GameCube’s less than stellar sales performance. Nintendo, thanks to Mario, is so closely linked to the genre that any blip in its fortunes results in panic that the classic genre is close to extinction. In truth it never has been and it likely never will be. The games evolve, perhaps throwing in more combat and less precision jumping, but the genre remains pretty strong. If, however, you…

The arcade-inspired action-adventure games mark the debut of the Tomb Raider franchise on the console. Both titles focus on exploration, discovery, platforming, and puzzle-solving, with co-operative multiplayer, character progression, and combat. How Psychonauts 2 turns the mind inside out

“It’s all in your head.” It’s a response that encapsulates all the condescension and ignorance surrounding mental health issues. And yet, in a way, it’s true. Subjective experience is an objective reality – that just so happens to be located and locked away in your head. These individual realities can only be conveyed through language and other subjective means of communication, and more and more games are grasping this fact, turning inward to explore and map the inland empires of the mind. They have all the tools of the medium at their disposal to turn the invisible workings of the…
