UK talent and companies recognised in 2021 Esports Awards industry nominations – new nominations include Mac, Caedrel, Pansy and more

The Esports Awards has this evening revealed more finalists for this year’s industry categories, and there are a host of UK-based talent included. Today, it was announced that UK coaches up for awards include Mac and MarkyB, plus there’s analyst Caedrel, colour casters Vedius and Johnnyboi_i, and play-by-play casters Machine, ODPixel and Pansy up for awards. Previously, this year’s nominees with UK offices included the likes of Dexerto, Hitmarker, The Story Mob, Hitmarker, Blast, Faceit and more. ESL announces Pro Tour CSGO changes, 2022 live events and new names for DreamHack Open and ESEA Premier tournaments

CSGO fans in the UK may be interested to learn that ESL Gaming has made a bunch of big structural changes for the ESL Pro Tour in 2022. The ESL Pro Tour CSGO 2022 will feature more than 25 competitions, including some live events with fans planned to return in person. These include flagship tournaments Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Katowice and IEM Cologne. “ESL are preparing to welcome back the community to in-person competitions in line with the very latest health guidance and safety precautions,” read a press release. Blast Premier donates $5,000 in esports team fines to UK-based gaming and mental health charity Safe In Our World

Esports tournament organiser Blast Premier has donated $5,000 to Safe In Our World – a UK-based video game charity that supports players, teams and organisations in the industry struggling with mental health issues. The global CSGO tournament organiser set aside fines that were accumulated and deducted from teams during the 2021 Spring Season (February to June) and donated them to a charity of choice.  The donation will go towards helping Safe in our World continue to deliver some of its work in the field of mental and physical wellbeing for the betterment of the wider gaming and esports industries.  Continue…

Riot Games parent company Tencent to acquire major UK games developer

Riot Games parent company Tencent is set to purchase one of the UK’s well-known game development studios. Chinese gaming giant Tencent has made a bid worth almost £1bn to acquire Sumo Group, which owns Atomhawk, Pipeworks Studios and Secret Mode, as well as Sumo Digital, which consists of several UK studios including Sumo Nottingham and Sumo Sheffield. Sumo Digital has produced a range of games over the years, including LittleBigPlanet 3, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Crackdown 3, several Forza titles and most recently Hood: Outlaws & Legends. Ireland’s Vela Games raises £12.5m in funding from Ubisoft, London Venture Partners and Novator

Vela Games, a Dublin-based studio with industry veterans from Blizzard, Epic, Riot Games, EA and Moon Studios, has today announced it’s secured $17.3m (£12.5m) Series A investment. The funding comes from lead investor Novator, with additional investment from Ubisoft and London Venture Partners, to fuel development of its breakthrough Multiplayer Online Co-Operative (MOCO) title, an MMO/MOBA hybrid codenamed Project-V. Founded in 2018 by Travis George, Brian Kaiser and Lisa Newon George, Vela Games previously raised $6.9m in funding rounds, to establish a team of over 25 developers and flesh out their design. Yesterday, MAD Lions beat Rogue 3-2 in the LEC finals. In doing so, they became the first League of Legends European champions in six and a half years outside of G2 and Fnatic.
