Staffordshire University has made a number of senior leadership changes within its games and esports departments. Dr Bobbie Fletcher has left after almost three decades at the university. She has been instrumental in games education at Staffs and within the UK, and is an experienced head of department having held various games and technology leadership roles at the university. Most recently her title was head of department in games and visual effects and associate professor in the School of Digital, Technologies and Arts. The esports industry conference will take place on November 8th and 9th 2021 at Boxpark Wembley, ‘connecting the biggest global brands with the most influential leaders and world-class speakers in the esports industry’. The 20,000 square foot dedicated events space at Boxpark promises to combine an esports conferences with unorthodox entertainment such as axe-throwing. Here East and The Good Growth Hub announce the launch of a new Industry Insights programme to help kickstart the careers of young people from across East London in the gaming sector. UK-based esports organisation Excel Esports will become the new neighbours of local rivals Fnatic after announcing a new HQ in Shoreditch, London, as well as £17m in funding. This new office will open later this summer and serve as an addition to Excel Esports’ Twickenham Stadium training facilities and Berlin-based player training facilities, which will continue to be used by the org. Vela Games, a Dublin-based studio with industry veterans from Blizzard, Epic, Riot Games, EA and Moon Studios, has today announced it’s secured $17.3m (£12.5m) Series A investment. The funding comes from lead investor Novator, with additional investment from Ubisoft and London Venture Partners, to fuel development of its breakthrough Multiplayer Online Co-Operative (MOCO) title, an MMO/MOBA hybrid codenamed Project-V. Founded in 2018 by Travis George, Brian Kaiser and Lisa Newon George, Vela Games previously raised $6.9m in funding rounds, to establish a team of over 25 developers and flesh out their design. UK esports organisation Excel Esports is getting another ‘exciting London HQ’, separate to the Excel training facilities at Twickenham Stadium. The hint was made during a partnership announcement with AndaSeat, which has become the official gaming chair supplier for Excel’s LEC team and BTXL team in the NLC.
