Square Enix on bringing characters to life and ditching episodes for Life Is Strange: True Colors

It’s fair to say that Deck Nine had a lot to prove with Life Is Strange: True Colors. While it wasn’t their first Life Is Strange – the Colorado studio released the spin-off game Before The Storm in 2017 – it was the first time they were tasked with creating their own world and characters, instead of inheriting Dontnod’s creations. Fortunately Deck Nine successfully managed the tightrope walk of honouring the series’ existing DNA, while still taking the Life Is Strange world in new directions. To find out more about how it was done, I sat down with Philip Lawrence…

Life is Strange: True Colors review – magic and mundane combine

Life is Strange first debuted in 2015, and since then, the series has carried a lot of things. Newly-made fans loved its attempts at a queer storyline; they hated its cringey, teen-clearly-written-by-out-of-touch-adult dialogue. But regardless, that first game set the tone for a series about (mostly) young people building connections with each other and trying to figure out a way into the future. Six years later, Life is Strange True Colors is more than just the next entry in this beloved series; it’s a testament to how much this franchise has grown and matured from the initial template. The first…

Life Is Strange: True Colors review: a more mature LIS, but one still beset by narrative growing pains

Whenever a new Life Is Strange game comes out I sometimes wonder how my life would manifest as an ironic and metaphorical super power. I usually stop quite quickly, because I have a feeling the answer would be somewhat disappointing. In the first game, Max Caulfield discovered she could rewind time or travel back to the past via photographs. In Life Is Strange 2, we shaped the outlook of young Daniel Diaz and how he used his somewhat fraught telekinetic powers. Now, in Life Is Strange: True Colors, we step into the shoes of Alex Chen, who can step into…

The top 10 games on PC in September

Just when we thought video games were properly back, we got another wave of delays last month. It’s totally understandable: unprecedented times and so on and etc.. So, can everyone stay as still as possible, please? It’d be an awful shame if Kena got pushed again. I’d really like to play that one. I’d really like to play a lot of these, to…

Life Is Strange Remastered Collection is delayed until early 2022

Life is going to be slightly less strange this September, it turns out. Real life will stay weird, I have no doubt, but Deck Nine’s adventure dramas are getting a bit spread out. While Life Is Strange: True Colors will still be launching in September, the Remastered Collection planned for the end of the month is now being delayed to avoid putting too much pressure on the development team. We can now expect the remastered bits to come in early 2022. Another trailer for True Colors will land tomorrow as well. Read more
