It’s still tough to be a new Eve Online player in 2022

“In a way you could say that we’ve been failing at teaching Eve for 19 years,” says Bergur Finnbogason, the creative director of Eve Online. It’s not the whole story when it comes to new players in the infamous space MMO, but it is the dominant one. Among the many graphs that Finnbogason presented to the Eve faithful during his Fanfest keynote in Reykjavík this year, one was a colourful standout. It showed Eve Online’s learning curve as a comedy cliff face, so steep that it turned back on itself. Stickmen tumbled from its peak, while others were crucified or…

The making of The Gunk: how the SteamWorld devs went from mist balls to saving the planet

Finding your niche can often be the key to success for smaller developers, but Swedish team Image & Form refuse to be pigeonholed. Over the last ten years they’ve tackled every genre, from tower defence to turn-based tactics, RPGs and action platformers. With their latest game, The Gunk, they’ve finally entered the realm of 3D adventure games. Released on Xbox Game Pass at the tail end of last year, The Gunk was a big step up for the makers of SteamWorld Dig. Not only was it their first game in 3D, and their first time using a new engine, but…

DreadXP are giving devs the creative freedom to make weird, surprising, lovely horror games

It’s strange now to think that, until May 2020, there were no Dread X games. Indie publishers DreadXP have become so synonymous with tightly curated, intriguing horror experiences that it’s hard to believe the original demo anthology that kickstarted that reputation is only approaching its second anniversary. Regular RPS readers may already be aware that (a) I’m a huge horror nerd, and (b) I think the games published under the DreadXP banner are something pretty special. I was equal parts grossed out and charmed by the Lovecraftian dating sim Sucker For Love: First Date when I reviewed it back in…

Vampire Survivors’ creator just wanted something to play at the weekend

2D bullet hell game Vampire Survivors is surely one of the most interesting success stories of the year, as what was a simple mobile game became popular almost overnight. Its very minimalistic roguelike style captured players looking for something casual, but still engrossing. You pick one of several characters and move them around the screen as they auto-attack. As enemies are disposed of the player levels up, along with changing weapons and gaining power-ups, with the ultimate goal being to keep the ever growing mob of enemies under control. On death you unlock new weapons and characters by spending coins…

Interview with Kaiprioska from Freaks 4U Gaming on the NLC and League of Legends esports in Northern Europe: ‘This region has so much potential and we’re in it for the long haul’

Last summer, Freaks 4U Gaming was appointed tournament organiser of the Northern League of Legends Championship (NLC), the Northern European ERL (European Regional League) region covering the UK, Ireland and Nordics. While the revised ‘multi-division league ecosystem’ ruffled some feathers in the scene, it’s clear that the broadcast production for the first season has been top-notch. Esports News UK submitted an interview request with Freaks 4U last year to get to know them better, and due to some F4U changes and our own slowness, we are publishing this later than we would’ve liked. Arcane’s creators have spoken about what fans can expect from Vi and Caitlyn’s relationship in Season 2 of Arcane

Arcane was a smash hit for Riot Games when it launched on Netflix last year, picking up rave reviews from fans and critics alike, as well as awards like the nine accolades it picked up at the recent Annie Awards. It was the portrayal of characters and their relationships that the League of Legends animated show did so well. One relationship that caught viewers’ interest in particular was between Caitlyn, an enforcer in Piltover, and the undercity rebel, Vi. Paradise Killer devs on the benefits of being really, really weird

In a move befitting a game about immortal beings who live out countless repeating lives on artificial islands powered by human sacrifice, Paradise Killer is getting a re-release. Sort of. It’s coming to next-gen consoles today, with all platforms (including PC) getting some extra bits added for free that weren’t in the original 2020 release. Not bad for a game that Kaizen Game Works creative director Oli Clarke Smith thought would only really sell to “a niche of freaks”. If you’re not one of those freaks, I’d heartily recommend becoming one. Playing Paradise Killer is like going to a seaside…
