Barnsley College launches esports coaching, health and wellbeing degree

Barnsley College has announced it’s running its own foundation degree in esports coaching and wellbeing. The new Level 5 undergraduate degree will launch this September at the SciTech Digital Innovation Hub, and will be titled ‘Esports Education: Coaching, Health and Wellbeing Foundation Degree’. It will be validated by Leeds Trinity University. The qualification aims to ‘develop students’ existing skills and support the development of transferable skills related to esports, sport, health, physical activity and coaching’. That’s according to a new study from human biology and psychology researchers at the University of Leeds, which investigated the physiological effects of stress related to gaming. The study by the UK university, commissioned by BetVictor, focused on popular FPS and battle royale games including Apex Legends, CSGO, Call of Duty Warzone and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). The publication of the organisation’s Global Safeguarding Policies ‘highlights Fnatic’s commitment to spearheading the conversation and development of safeguarding in pro gaming to build a safer system that protects current and future gamers’. The safeguarding policies were developed in partnership with leading experts, including safeguarding training consultancy Safeguarding Today, key advisers to the government on online harms and safeguarding, and safeguarding leads at professional sports teams, including various Premier League clubs.
