Hellish Quart, Midnight Fight Express and more of our favourite gamescom indie reveals

Last week was one of the busiest of the year when it comes to video game news. We took a break to try and keep up with the deluge of reveals, announcements and trailers, but we return today to bring you another edition of our hidden indie gems feature. We’re doing things a little differently this week. We’re focusing entirely on games announced, showed off or something new at or around gamescom. Some of them even have demos available right now, and we’ll make sure to mention how you can get a hold of them. We’re absolutely spoiled for choice this week,…

Doom Eternal’s Ancient Gods DLC won’t require the base game

Doom Eternal ‘s upcoming DLC might take place in the immediate wake of the base campaign, but that doesn’t mean you’ll need to have actually played it. Arriving this October, Id Software this weekend confirmed that you’ll be able to pick up the first bit of two-part romp The Ancient Gods without having actually bought the base game, letting you jump straight into the deicidal carnage. Elusive fox adventure Tunic is playable this weekend

It’s been a minute, eh Tunic? For as long as I’ve been paying attention, Andrew Shouldice’s sharp, foxy roll n’ slash has been hiding in the bushes. Ever-present, yet always skittering just out of sight. But while Tunic may be no closer to an eventual release, you can play a bit of it right now thanks to a free Gamescom demo. (more…)

Take a spooky hike with Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart Of The Forest’s time-limited demo

Fancy a walk in the woods, readers? Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the Forest, a howling World Of Darkness narrative written by former Witcher devs and Wanderlust creators Different Tales, has opened its winding, text-based trails with a limited demo this weekend. Just try and stick to the paths while hiking, yeah? I hear there are beasts aplenty in the darkest depths of the forest. (more…)

Monster Harvest looks like Stardew with a side of Pokemon

Ever wondered what it’d be like if Pokemon’s perpetually-childish heroes settled down to start a farm? Lucky for you, that’s exactly the premise of Monster Harvest. Sowing its first seeds this week, Maple Powered Games’ upcoming crop punctuates Stardew Valley‘s pastoral life sim with brutal fights between half-plant, half-animal hybrids called Planimals. Geddit? Serious Sam 4 will let you pilot the Pope’s personal mech

I had heard that Serious Sam 4 would let us drive a Popemobile. I had not heard that the Popemobile in question is a giant heavily-armed mech whose boot-up sequence dialogue concludes, “All systems ready. Let God sort them out.” A new trailer hot out of Gamescom today shows the Popemobile in action, smashing a tentacle monster in the middle Vatican City and alright, yup, this is some big brash stupid spectacle I can get behind. See the Pope’s private Evangelion in action in the trailer below. (more…)

Lemnis Gate is a tactical FPS about fighting inside time loops

Time loop games seem to be all the rage right now don’t they? You’ve got stuff like Arkane’s Deathloop and Luis Antonio’s 12 Minutes, and now the upcoming FPS Lemnis Gate, which we saw a shiny new trailer for during Gamescom Opening Night Live. It’s a strategic first-person shooter in which players duke it out across five turns which each take place in a 25-second time loop. It sounds… different, and it looks kinda cool. Check out the new trailer for yourself below. (more…)

The biggest deals are on a bunch of Bethesda games, with a massive 50% off Doom Eternal and Fallout 76, as well as flash deals on loads more. Alas, the Bethesda deals are only available to those buying in Europe (which thankfully still includes the UK), but there’s still plenty of other game bargains to sink your teeth into if your current place of residence is elsewhere. Read on for my pick of the bunch. (more…)

Observer: System Redux confirmed for PC, and it has a demo now

As a nice little Gamescom surprise, Bloober Team today announced that Observer: System Redux will also be coming to PC. The original Observer from 2017 was a lovely little cyberpunk horror game starring Rutger “crying in the shower” Hauer, and the upcoming System Redux is an expanded and prettied-up version – but was only announced for next-gen consoles. Well, Bloober today not only confirmed a PC release, they released a demo so we can see for ourselves. System Redux won’t be a free upgrade, but it does have a discount if you’re quick. (more…)

Blood Bowl 3 continues Games Workshop’s fantasy sport in 2021

Following a brief and vague announcement, publishers Nacon today revealed that Blood Bowl 3 is coming in 2021 with more violent fantasy American football. Cyanide Studio’s latest adaptation of the Games Workshop tabletop warsportsgame is building on the latest version, with the new teams and rules of the Second Season Edition. Today’s new trailer doesn’t have any of the game in action, but it does show some downright unsporting equipment like lawnmowers and tentacles. (more…)

Little Nightmares 2 is coming in February, looking nightmarish

The horribly squidgy world of tiny tots and giant cannibals will call us back for Little Nightmares 2 on the 11th of February, 2021, Bandai Namco announced today. The first game was wonderfully unpleasant and yup, the puzzle-platforming horror sequel looks it too. We’ll be playing as a new wee kid this time, with our old littl’un tagging along to help us with yet more oversized terrors. Here, meet some of them in the new trailer below. (more…)

Rejoice! Absolute classic citybuilder Pharaoh is getting a remake next year

It seems a developer has managed to leverage two bits of my Ancient Egypt-related childhood nostalgia in one go today. Triskell Interactive and publisher Dotemu used an animated trailer that reminds me of famous Val Kilmer musical Prince Of Egypt to announced a 2021 remake of absolute stone cold classic citybuilder Pharaoh. Well played. Pharaoh: A New Era was revealed as part of Gamescom this year, in the wake of the Gamescom Opening Night Live show (and we have rounded up every trailer from that for you already). The trailer is almost entirely just nice scenes of life in Ancient…

Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead exists, but mostly in live-action trailer form

What’s more stressful than constructing a shonky haphazard bridge? Why, constructing a shonky haphazard bridge while zombies attack, of course! Developers ClockStone and publishers Headup Games revealed Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, with a live-action teaser trailer and so little else that the Steam store page just has screenshots from the production of that teaser trailer. Cliff notes are: it has bridge construction, it has zombies, and those zombies are the same ones that have been troubling Andrew Lincoln and his son Coral for all these years. (more…)
