Why Obsidian’s Grounded is the blueprint for survival games’ future

An unassuming Xbox exclusive that many have overlooked could hold the key to the success of survival games’ to come. In an act of true betrayal, I have turned my back on Playstation, toward the seductive allure of the Xbox Series S. I’ve long believed that the weapon for generations moving forward are no longer individual exclusives, but a veritable feast of games available to download and play instantly – and right now, Xbox Game Pass is a mighty tool in Microsoft’s belt. There are classic collections like the Gears and Halo series, alongside a deep variety of library titles,…

Have you played… Shelter?

With all the Sad Dad™ games that have cropped up in recent years, many have rightfully been asking: “Where are all the video game mums at?”. Well, what if I told you that Swedish indie studio Might and Delight have been putting mums at the centre of their games since 2013? Yup, elephant mums in Shelter 3, Lynx mums in Shelter 2, and the OG badass badger mum in Shelter 1. Sure it’s kinda terrible that the only major rep mums are getting in video games is in the form of Might and Delight’s animal tales, but I’ll honestly take…

I hope Starfield’s financial system is as oppressive as real life

Exploitative banking might be just the thing to make Starfield’s grounded, believable and relatable spacefaring world ring true to us back here on Earth. Take a peek at New Atlantis, the crown jewel of Starfield’s space-age cities, and you’ll find the usual utopian futurist sights. A spotless landing strip to welcome new arrivals, gleaming cream-coloured buildings interspersed with lush trees, and a sparkling central high-rise that curves upwards to the stars. Look a little closer and you’ll notice sitting slap bang in the middle of them is a bank, crammed within the otherwise idyllic scene. At least, it’s probably a…

The best Xbox Game Pass game costs less than the monthly sub

It achieves more with a handful of sprites and some clever psychology than most AAAs do with infinite budgets. ^Stay tuned for Jim’s video essay on the genius of Vampire Survivors. Teasing around the edge of the mob, moving in concentric circles so as to maximise the surface area of your garlic aura’s damage zone. An instinctive, brushing motion. Methodically scrubbing arcane horrors from the world as you would coffee stains from tooth enamel. Since the mobile release, both rituals conducted at once, either side of bed time. The life of a Vampire Survivors Enjoyer is, in essence, spiritual. And…

The RPS Selection Box: Liam’s bonus games of the year 2022

Oh. OK. I guess it’s time for me to publicly confess which games I voted for in this year’s advent calendar but that didn’t get it, and without the usual protection of anonymity granted by group lists. Listen: please don’t judge me. I just want to say that up top before you find out where I live and start sending me pizzas or something. I am fallible. You cut me, I bleed red. I put my bread in the toaster one slice at a time. Anyway, with that out the way, here’s a list of things I liked this year…

Our favourite RPS videos from 2022

Hello! VidBud Liam here. You may recognise me from those videos that autoplay on every page. Or not. It depends on how quickly you scroll past, I suppose. I joined team Arpus all the way back in February, and to say the last 11 months have been a whirlwind is a bit of an understatement. In less than a year I’ve made just under 90 videos covering a wide range of topics from major releases to international gaming events and brand-new hardware. My first year at RPS has been busy, basically. So when Katharine asked me to pull together a…

Now, with the latest update – Mirafleur Moonshade – the…

2022 Games of the Year: Tunic, and Dom’s other GOTY picks

How a tiny little fox fought off the industry’s most imposing behemoths, armed soldiers, and a superhero team-up. It’s been, really, quite a good year for games. I’ve played a lot more than I thought I would, with some of the smaller titles impressing me more than I expected, and some of the bigger titles coming in as aggressively underwhelming. But, in the middle of the melee that was 2022’s release slate, there was one little indie that stood just that bit taller than the rest – and that’s ironic, given the stature of the little game’s little hero. Here’s…

Elden Ring DLC is real, free, and coming tomorrow

You’ll finally be able to pay a visit to those colosseums. If you’re looking for an excuse to jump back into Elden Ring, then you’re in luck, as a PVP-focused update is coming tomorrow. Bandai Namco has announced that the free Colosseum update will be coming to all versions of Elden Ring tomorrow, December 7, after fans have speculated pretty much since the game released that those mysterious colosseums were more than just decoration. Finally, with this update, the colosseum doors will be opening up so that players can face off against one another. “The Colosseums of Limgrave, Leyndell and…

No Man’s Sky player makes a free base-building app inspired by Townscaper

One No Man’s Sky player has made a standalone app that lets you construct bases by moving, snapping together, and colouring parts ready to slot straight into the game. Technical artist Charlie Banks has popped the base-building app up on NexusMods, and has used it to create a massive robot that looks a little like the Iron Giant squatting down. Banks compares the base-building app’s simplicity to Oskar Stålberg’s procedurally generated hamlet-crafter Townscaper, although it seems a bit more complicated than that game. Read more
