Staffordshire University responds to strike action over pensions and staff being employed by a subsidiary company

Staffordshire University, the first institution in the UK to offer an esports degree, has said it’s “disappointed” strike action is taking place over its decision to hire new staff via a subsidiary company. Staffordshire’s University and College Union (UCU) has been striking over the university’s decision that new academic staff will not be employed directly by the university, but by a subsidiary company. “It allows the university to deny future academics access to the standard, nationally agreed Teachers’ Pension Scheme,” a member of the UCU told Esports News UK. UK League of Legends coach to lead esports teaching team at HSDC College

A UK League of Legends coach has joined the Esports BTEC teaching team at Havant and South Downs College (HSDC). Rhys ‘Kybet’ Williams, who has experience coaching nDurance in Division 3 of the UK, Ireland and Nordics NLC, Peak Esports in the UKEL and more, has been working in esports for almost five years. He started as a player (having reached the Arena Clash finals in both seasons he played) and League of Legends coach, before taking his coaching career full time three years ago. Staffordshire University’s former games head joins College of Esports as academic director

Professor Bobbie Fletcher, former head of department for games and visual effects at Staffordshire University, has recently been appointed academic director at the new College of Esports. The College of Esports has been set up to offer university degrees focused on the business of esports from its campus at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, not far from Staffordshire’s London campus. Professor Fletcher has more than 20 years of experience in games education and helped launch the UK’s first esports degree at Staffordshire University. Bournemouth and Poole College converts 132-seat theatre into esports arena

Bournemouth and Poole College has tested out its lecture theatre turned esports arena for the first time, with its BPC Buccaneers student esports team. The college has converted its existing 132-seat theatre into an esports arena, by adding a 5m-high lighting rig, 4K projector and 6m wide retractable screen, plus a new stereo sound system with two 1kw subs. Grassroots UK esports organisation Vulpine Esports has launched work experience opportunities and workshops for students in schools. Almost 70% of UK parents believe esports can play a positive role in school, but only 32% are happy for their child to have a career in it, finds new education survey by Dell and Intel

Parents in the UK are warming to the benefits of esports in general, but aren’t yet convinced of the career possibilities for their children. That’s according to new research from OnePoll, commissioned by Dell Technologies and Intel, which surveyed 1,500 UK parents with children who play esports and 500 financial decision makers in education such as headteachers, CIOs and department heads.  The results show that over two-thirds (69%) of UK parents believe esports allows their children to develop skills that they might not get through traditional education methods. Two students from Queen Mary’s College (QMC) in Basingstoke have recreated the institution’s esports facility in Minecraft with impressive accuracy. QMC first opened its £300,000 esports facility in May 2021, which includes 52 gaming systems, an editing and streaming room, mini cafe and even a yoga room. The Esports BTEC qualification from Pearson UK and the British Esports Association is taught there, and the QM Samurai student teams take part in the British Esports Student Championships from there.
