Update (April 11th 2022): Astro has joined UK esports organisation Viperio’s Rainbow Six line-up. The roster can be found below, with fellow UK player Aktr on board as a substitute. Viperio will be playing in the Rainbow Six Siege Northern Premier League. Excited to be back playing again with a team, still slowly getting back into siege but the lads have been super supportive with everything. More good news soon! It’s been one week since esports organisation Fnatic – whose headquarters are in London, UK – launched their Web3 membership offering in partnership with Crypto.com. Their first membership programme promises to offer fans ‘an array of money-can’t-buy rewards and features across content, digital and physical products, exclusive events and more’, including the likes of player meet-and-greets, Fnatic shop discounts, plus an annual pro jersey and a loot box worth at least $100. The UK, Ireland and Nordics LoL esports community is up in arms over grassroots tournaments being shut down by Riot and Freaks 4U

Large pockets of the UK, Ireland and Nordics League of Legends (LoL) esports community have spoken out against the closure of amateur circuits. Danish tournament organiser Leagues.gg published a statement on Twitter claiming that Riot Games and Freaks 4U (F4U) have forced them to halt their current League of Legends operations, due to what appears to be a breach of Riot’s official tournament guidelines. Leagues.gg runs LoL events like the UK Winter Showdown and was about to begin its spring 2022 season before it was halted. G2 Esports launches new PFP NFT project Samurai Army with randomly generated NFTs and perks such as live chats with pro players: “We’re creating a gamified social club for sweaty gamers, esports and NFT fans alike”

European esports organisation G2 Esports has launched its own PFP NFT project and gamified social club known as ‘Samurai Army’. An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a unique digital asset (usually an image or a piece of digital art), with the buyer receiving a digital receipt saying they own it. NFTs can be bought and owned and re-sold, usually for cryptocurrency. A PFP is short for a profile picture. An example of a popular existing NFT PFP project is CryptoPunks, which has seen some of its pixelated character face NFTs sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Continue reading…

Rainbow Six community rallies around UK player Astro over decision to stop playing following cancer diagnosis

UK Rainbow Six Siege player Reece ‘ASTRO’ Lambert has announced he is taking a break from competitive play after a recent diagnosis. As reported by Siege.gg, ASTRO (not to be confused with Brazilian player Leonardo ‘Astro’ Luis) posted an update on Twitter sharing the news that he has lymphoma, a type of cancer. He said he will be taking a break from esports to focus on his treatments. UK esports organisation Excel Esports has teamed up with HyperX and Beyond NRG to launch a new Fortnite tournament, the XL Community Cup. The one-day duos tournament will be held on Sunday November 28th 2021, following qualifiers on November 24th. The tournament will be hosted by esports personality Adam Savage live from the Ginx TV London studios and will include a mixture of live analysis and casting from Leven2k and Reiss. A new feature in League of Legends was added to the public beta environment (PBE) the other day which drew a mixed response from the community. The ‘Make My Profile Private’ option was added to PBE v11.23. When checked, it’d allow players to hide their rank, match history and gameplay stats from other players, though the summoner name, icon and level would remain public. However, Esports News UK understands this was not intended to go live on the PBE server just yet, and sources have said it will be removed soon. Warwick Esports launches The Pack for greater representation of women and non-binary people in esports

Warwick Esports, the University of Warwick’s esports society, has launched its new community, The Pack, open exclusively to women and non-binary individuals. The community is based out of this Discord server and ‘will have a more relaxed approach to the other servers run by the society’. It’s open to all women and non-binary individuals who want to join, not just students or those at the university. The Pack will act as a safe environment for members to chat with like-minded individuals, run events like game nights, competitions and team-building exercises. Women in Games announces Valorant Community Cup featuring UK orgs, missharvey to conduct player interviews at Women in Games Conference

UK-based not-for-profit organisation Women in Games has released details of its upcoming esports tournament – the Valorant Community Cup. This invitational for women players takes place on September 11th and 12th, and will showcase eight European esports teams. It’s ‘designed to build and strengthen the community of competitive gamers’. Teams invited to participate include Chat Banned, fReya, Lux Nova, Project X, Rix.GG Lightning, Tenstar Nova and The Goose House Nova. UK-based esports organisation Guild Esports has announced the launch of its official pro player jersey, which has divided opinion in the esports community. The jersey features the Guild logo, designed by acclaimed streetwear designer Fergus Purcell, alongside the logo of Subway, which became Guild’s official quick-service restaurant partner following the signing of a two-year multi-million-pound sponsorship deal in March this year. The British Esports Association’s Women in Esports initiative, set up to promote inclusivity and diversity within the esports industry, has announced a new partnership with Dota Valkyries.  The Dota Valkyries offer support to players in Dota 2, from grassroots to pro, and aim to expand the Dota 2 community and bring more women into competitive play. Both parties will aim to work together in supporting women within the Dota 2 scene, in addition to increasing participation of marginalised genders within esports.
