Looks like we’re getting a Call of Duty in 2023 after all

What started out as a paid expansion for Modern Warfare 2 is now the next game. Activision will not skip out on shipping a premium Call of Duty game in 2023 as originally thought. This is according to a Bloomberg report which states Call of Duty 2023 will be “an extension” of Modern Warfare 2, per sources familiar with the matter. The game will reportedly bring over maps and modes from the current game; however, plans are also subject to change. Microsoft first announced its plans for a 10-year deal with Nintendo back in September of last year. These plans detailed that Microsoft was committed to bringing the Call of Duty series to the Nintendo Switch, provided that the merger with Activision Blizzard was approved. Xbox Series S isn’t holding next-gen back, reality is. In more recent developments, president and vice chair of…

FTC hearings could delay Microsoft’s buyout of Activision Blizzard

Microsoft were hoping to complete their takeover of Activision Blizzard by the end of their financial year in June. That’s looking less likely now that the US Federal Trade Commission have published a schedule that sets dates for final hearings to decide on the merger, and they’re going to begin on August 2nd. As this is just the kick off for hearings about the case, it’s likely that any FTC decision on whether the $68.7 billion (£56 billion) deal can go ahead will take some time to emerge. Read more

Gabe Newell shrugs off Microsoft’s legal commitment to keep Call Of Duty on Steam

If you haven’t heard, Microsoft are currently trying to buy Activision Blizzard. Competition regulators from the UK, the EU and the US have been questioning the deal, so in an attempt to reassure them last month Microsoft apparently offered Sony a ten-year commitment to keep selling Call Of Duty on Playstation. Today, Xbox Head Phill Spencer announced that they’ve made a similar 10-year CoD commitment to Steam and, uh, Nintendo, on which no CoD games currently exist. Nintendo have signed, while Valve CEO Gabe Newell says his company won’t bother with a legal agreement, in part because they don’t believe…

PlayStation doesn’t think Battlefield can keep up with Call of Duty for much longer

The players, the media and even other developers have been down on EA and Battlefield lately – and now even Sony is taking shots at the FPS series. It’s been a messy old week for Sony and Microsoft. After the UK Government published Xbox and PlayStation’s full arguments over the Activision Blizzard acquisition case to a public domain, media types and players alike have been trawling the pages, sniffing out bytes of snark issued by both companies in an effort to make themselves look smaller than they actually are. The end game, of course, is for Sony to kick up…

Modern Warfare 2 is the best Call of Duty multiplayer in years – and a great indication of things to come

Call of Duty has been on a bit of a downwards trend lately, but the latest Modern Warfare rights the series and suggests a bright future, too. Call of Duty has a lot of problems. Even in the last seven days, documents have been published that show the close link the series has with the US armed forces, suggesting the game is a big, military-industrial psyop designed to rescue the image of the US war machine and drive recruitment to its ranks. As if that’s not bad enough, the single-player portions of the games often whitewash US war crimes and…

Warzone 2 patch makes armor piercing ammo no longer pierce armor

In one of the strangest updates we’ve seen to Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty has decided AP rounds no longer PA. What do you call armor-piercing ammo that doesn’t pierce armor? That’s the question hot on the lips of the Call of Duty community right now as it comes to terms with a very strange update from the latest patch in Warzone 2. Have you seen Warzone 2 in action yet? We’ve already taken a look at what the Modern Warfare 2 patch notes contain over in our dedicated article, but there’s another set of changes…

If you click on a link and make a purchase we may receive a small commission. Read our editorial policy. Activision is not shutting down Warzone entirely, but you won’t be able to play it for a few days soon. The original Warzone will not be sunset, after all. Activision has confirmed that, with the impending launch of Warzone 2.0, the existing game will not be replaced. However, it will be going offline for a time to make room for Warzone 2.0. For starters, the old game will be renamed to Warzone Caldera, to distinguish it from Warzone 2.0. That…

Phil Spencer calls investigations of Activision deal “warranted,” still confident it will happen

Regulation boards are still trying to determine the impact of the deal. Xbox head Phil Spencer believes that the various investigations from regulators across the world over the Activision Blizzard acquisition are fair, but he’s confident the deal will go through. With a deal as big as the one Microsoft is trying to go through with, it’s unsurprising that it would come under some scrutiny. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority is concerned whether the deal will “lessen competition,” so there are still questions over whether it will go through or not. In a recent interview at the Wall Street…

Modern Warfare 2 has a surprisingly good benchmark on PC

Modern Warfare 2 does have a PC benchmark test, and it offers more information than most games’ care to. If you’ve been playing PC games for long enough, you’ll no doubt be familiar with how rare it is to see a half-decent benchmark test in a PC game. Often times, people come up with their own stress runs and report everything manually. Plenty of PC games do include benchmarks, though seemingly just to check a box and get it out of the way – but not Modern Warfare 2. Our Modern Warfare 2 campaign thoughts. Modern Warfare 2 is Call of Duty’s biggest-ever Steam launch

The decision to bring Call of Duty back to Steam is paying off very well for Modern Warfare 2. Modern Warfare 2 is very hot right now. All that excitement extends to the PC platform, where yearly Call of Duty releases tended to perform poorly or, in some cases, not register at all. That trend has been changing for a while now, of course, but Modern Warfare 2 appears to have taken things to new heights on PC this year. MW2 campaign early access set things up nicely, too. On Steam, Modern Warfare 2 has been – and continues to…

Modern Warfare 2 players on PC and Xbox can’t disable cross-play

The option to disable cross-play in Modern Warfare 2 on PC, as well as Xbox, is conspicuously absent. Modern Warfare 2, as with most of the recent Call of Duty games, supports full multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression on all platforms. This allows players to party up together, and matchmake against each other. For one reason or another, however, some would prefer to play only with players on their own platform, which is where the option to disable cross-play comes in. Except, it’s only available on PlayStation at this time. Return of the good ol’ days? Though this might seem like…

Phil Spencer hints at a future Game Pass price hike

CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer spoke about the possibility of price increases for consoles, games and Game Pass at the Wall Street Journal’s annual Tech Live conference (thanks to The Verge for transcribing.) “We’ve held price on our console, we’ve held price on games and our subscription. I don’t think we’ll be able to do that forever,” Spencer admits. “I do think at some point we’ll have to raise some prices on certain things.” He was quick to point out, though, that these changes wouldn’t come into effect this holiday season, as Microsoft wants to “maintain the prices that…

Flying to New Zealand to play Modern Warfare 2 early may get you locked out

Cancel your flights to New Zealand, everyone. You won’t be able to play Modern Warfare 2 early using that ol’ trick. Infinity Ward has warned excited Modern Warfare 2 players eager to jump into multiplayer as early as possible, that changing their console’s region to access the game before it actually goes live where they physically are, will cause “connectivity issues.” On top of that, the developer could block players from accessing the game entirely until it officially launches in their region. We were so-so on the beta, will our opinions change at launch? The warning was delivered in an…
