Wipeout-style racing game Pacer blasts onto Steam this September

When Wipeout first released back in 1995 it completely blew racing games out the water with its hyper-fast pace and anti-gravity crafts. Except for an HD Collection in 2017, Sega’s sci-fi racing game has since been in retirement, but a spiritual successor is on the horizon.  Developers R8 Games has announced that their anti-gravity racing game Pacer will be out on Steam September 17, 25 years after Wipeout’s release. Check out the reveal trailer above for some glossy combat racing; sunglasses are heavily advised.  Following a successful Kickstarter, it launched on Steam Early Access back in 2015 as Formula Fusion…

Intel 665p M.2 SSD Gets EoL Date Less Than a Year After Release

Intel SSD 655p (Image credit: Newegg)In what might come as a shock to many, Intel yesterday announced the discontinuation of its Intel SSD 665p. The 665p (codename Neptune Harbor Refresh), which was the successor to the Intel SSD 660p, debuted in November of last year. According to Intel’s Product Change Notification [PDF], the drives will be available to order until January 31, 2021 with the final shipment date taking place April 30, 2021. Intel cooked up the 665p with a similar recipe used in the 660p. The drive arrived with the same Silicon Motion SM2263 NVMe SSD controller with the novelty of…

Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access launch won’t happen in August

We expected Baldur’s Gate 3 to launch into Early Access in August, probably. Maybe. Hopefully, at least: Larian CEO Swen Vincke said in June that the studio was pushing hard to make it, but the COVID-19 pandemic could slow things down. “We’ve been hit like everybody else in the world,” he said at the time. “Nonetheless, we managed to make a lot of progress, so we think we’re going to make it.”With August now upon us, Larian has been forced to reconsider Vincke’s optimism. The studio announced on Twitter today that it won’t make the August Early Access release, but that…

Samsung rumours suggest Nvidia might not be the only company after Arm

Samsung Electronics is apparently considering acquiring a small stake in Arm Holdings, at least it is according to an anonymous “top industry official” quoted by Korea Times. Samsung apparently doesn’t intend to hold a controlling stake in the company, rather something between three percent and five percent, but will be part of a bigger consortium to try and snap up Arm.There are a few benefits to Samsung investing in Arm, but the main one would be to reduce its licensing fees for producing Arm-based chips. Samsung’s Exynos chips are Arm-based and can be found in a number of its products,…

Skater XL has an achievement that takes over 100 days to unlock

By Cian Maher, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 16:36 GMT Skater XL has an achievement that can only be unlocked after travelling over 40,000 in-game kilometres, which would take you approximately 2,700 hours of doing virtual ollies. Trophy hunters are not happy. If you’ve managed to nab every other achievement in Skater XL, and are becoming increasingly infuriated by the dastardly “Travel over 40.075 km in total” one, I’m afraid I’m about to ruin your day.Apparently the dot has managed to wander three decimal places to the right, which is a bit inconvenient for people who don’t want to skateboard the…

Fall Guys is out now, but the servers are taking a beating

Fall Guys is having a very good launch day, at least in terms of player numbers. After its very popular beta, it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise, but developer Mediatonic might have underestimated how many people want to become a clumsy bean. Earlier today, the Fall Guys Twitter account reported that 120,000 people were playing concurrently. Since PS Plus subscribers can play, many of them will be on PS4, but a quick glance at SteamDB shows that plenty of people have been playing on PC, too, with a peak of more than 50,000 players. It’s also today’s top…

Best antivirus for PC gaming 2020

Not everyone will be in need of the best antivirus for PC, but if you find yourself wanting of a little extra protection for peace of mind, or if you really are susceptible to dodgy downloads, then one of the packages we recommend below will help. When you’re just about to snatch the winning kill in Valorant, the last thing you need is for Windows to bounce you to the desktop to let you know it’s scanned your system and everything is clear. That really annoys us. Like, really, really annoys us, it’s not a good antivirus experience. We expect much…

Perhaps something a little more simple, and a little less expensive, is more your speed. A 1? Get outta here! Shoo! It’s one thing to have a keyboard and mouse synced up to the same color scheme, it’s another to have lights all over your PC case, gaming monitor, and desk all glowing in unison. UFC 4 is “either one or two frames more responsive than” previous games

EA Vancouver has reworked the standup to give it more pop in UFC 4. The UFC games have always been good, but the sense of raw power has always been missing from the standup game – the twist of the hips transferring into an outstretched fist smashing against jawbone isn’t easy to capture in a sim. Luckily, the animations and underlying systems have been reworked for this sequel to lend those hands more weight.“One of the biggest things that we’ve changed in relation to stand-up is actually a change of the entire control scheme,” creative director Brian Hayes explained in…

UFC 4 career mode interview – coming out of the cage and it’s been doing just fine

We got the chance to sit down with Brian Hayes, creative director behind UFC 4, to talk all about career mode and the quality of life changes coming to EA Vancouver’s MMA sequel. Here’s the interview in full: What differentiates the career mode of this one to the previous UFC games?Brian Hayes: The biggest difference between career mode on UFC 4 and previous ones is really the non-linearity, or the unscripted nature of the journey you can have. So, that was a lot of the feedback that we got on previous iterations was that it was pretty much: fight to…

The Arbiter’s plot in Halo 2 is basically Lilo and Stitch (2002)

I never noticed until somebody else pointed it out, but the Arbiter’s storyline in Halo 2 is exactly like the plot of the Lilo and Stitch movie that came out two years before it. Halo 2 launched for the original Xbox in 2004. It tells the story of the Arbiter, an Elite who is being punished for failing to prevent the destruction of a Halo ring. As the Arbiter – which is the name of a rank, not a type of alien lizard – you realize that everything the Covenant told you is a big, fat lie, and decide to…

Arm Co-Founder: Nvidia Owning Arm Would Be a Disaster

Just recently, news surfaced that Nvidia is interested in acquiring Arm from SoftBank, which stirred up quite some fuss. While many individuals agree that it would be a good move for Nvidia own sake, it’s also clear that many think it would be bad for the industry, and one of those people is Arm’s co-founder, Hermann Hauser. As interviewed by the BBC, Hauser is on record expressing that he is against Nvidia as an owner of the company, though he also believes the deal won’t end up going through.”It’s one of the fundamental assumptions of the ARM business model that it…

Researchers Build Open-Source SSD Controller That Surpasses 7 GB/s

Researchers lead by Professor Myung-Soo Jeong at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a new SSD controller that is able to surpass 7 GB/s in read speeds, as reported by FNN News. The controller is built using the OpenExpress standards, and its designs are available for free to universities and research institutes. What’s impressive about the 7 GB/s read speed is that very few SSDs available on the market nowadays achieve speeds anywhere near those. Theoretically, NVMe drives using four PCI-Express 4.0 lanes should be able to reach this figure, but today’s commercial controllers haven’t been…

If you’ve ever been a Star Trek fan, you’ve probably imagined what it would be like to sit in the captain’s chair of a Federation starship. Over the years there have been dozens of Star Trek videogames on PC, from point-and-click adventures to first-person shooters. But Star Trek: Bridge Commander is the closest a digital recreation of the show has ever gotten to deeply simulating the experience of being in command of a Starfleet vessel. The game starts with a bang, literally, as a star mysteriously destabilises and explodes, killing the captain of the USS Dauntless. The ship’s relatively inexperienced first…

The completely true and not made up superhero origin story of famous video game dudes

Hideo Kojima recently revealed that he was stung by “at least ten bees all at once” before becoming a video game designer. This is the Japanese creator famous for the Metal Gear Solid series. It’s no coincidence that Metal Gear Solid 3 features a boss battle called The Pain: a man infected by a parasite that allows him to secrete a pheromone that controls insects, including – you guessed it – bees. What I’m saying is, Kojima is basically Spider-Man and being stung by “at least ten bees all at once” is his superhero origin story. That got me thinking,…
