Great moments in PC gaming: Late night cruises in Euro Truck Simulator 2

Great moments in PC gaming are bite-sized celebrations of some of our favorite gaming memories. I’ll admit it, I used to be a bit of a Truck Sim trash-talker. I thought people who enjoyed driving a virtual truck across condensed countries had far too much free time on their hands. I blame it on the summer holidays I spent in my Dad’s truck, where 90 percent of my day consisted of napping in the cab bed, and the other 10 percent being desperate for the toilet. But lockdown fever and a particularly bad day left me desiring a late-night drive…

Outriders’ crossplay is fixed, but inventory wipes remain

Due to a desynchronization between the code for the PC and console versions of Outriders, the looter-shooter’s crossplay hasn’t been working for over a week. That’s been fixed now, according to the official Outriders Twitter account. It’s not all good news, however. The bug that’s been causing some players to lose their entire inventories after a crash has continued, even after this week’s patch. The patch, which also nerfed the trickster and technomancer classes, was intended to greatly reduce the frequency of inventory wipes. But as publisher Square Enix noted in a post-launch dev news update, “Since the recent patch…

Quantic Dream issues statement on toxic workplace court case

In 2018, French press outlets Canard PC, Le Monde, and Mediapart published articles about the work culture of Quantic Dream—the studio responsible for games like Fahrenheit, Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human, and Heavy Rain. According to Canard PC’s investigation (link contains NSFW images), Quantic Dream employees were subject to a “long crunch pattern” on each game, and one manager created and shared “600 photomontages of dubious taste” featuring the faces of staff edited into the bodies of others, including porn stars and a Nazi—harassment that led to the departure of the entire IT department and a court case being…

Here’s a look at Resident Evil Village’s map

Any new game in the Resident Evil franchise is sure to get folks excited, but the meme avalanche that ensued over Resident Evil Village’s Lady Dimitrescu was something different. She’s been the focus of attention for the last few months, but Capcom has recently branched out to show off the world map and a new character. IGN got a peek at the map, which shows the location of Castle Dimitrescu (where the PS5 demo takes place, and the tall vampire lady lives) in the north. ‘Heisenberg’s Factory,’ ‘House Beneviento,’ ‘Morseau’s Reservoir,’ and a few other interesting locations are scattered around…

Spellbreak’s first major update is now available

Spellbreak, the free-to-play battle royale game with a fantasy theme, arrived on the Epic Games Store in September of last year. It quickly amassed 5 million players, and now developer Proletariat is keeping the fun going with a new update. Spellbreak’s Chapter 2 update, nicknamed ‘The Fracture,’ is now available on all platforms. It adds a new 5v5 objective-based mode, where you have to capture and control zones to gain points for your team. There’s also a new seasonal ranking system, like just about every other competitive multiplayer game these days, as well as new outfits to buy and more…

Stellaris details its free 3.0 ‘Dick’ update in new video

Stellaris is one of the best strategy games available on PC right now, a massive space sandbox that makes almost anything possible. Paradox Interactive already announced a free update for the game alongside the Nemesis Expansion, and now the developers have published a video showing off some of its features (embedded above). Stellaris 3.0 ‘Dick’ is named after Philip K Dick, the science fiction author behind The Man in the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the latter of which served as inspiration for the 1982 film Blade Runner. It’s more fun to just call it the…

Ubisoft promises two major updates for Ghost Recon Breakpoint this year

Ghost Recon Breakpoint was released back in 2019, and received generally-poor reviews for its tedious gameplay and all-over-the-place design. Ubisoft promised that it would continue to update the game based on player feedback, and now the company has revealed what’s changing this year. Ubisoft reiterated last month that Ghost Recon Breakpoint would receive a few updates throughout 2021, and now a roadmap has been published. There are two major updates planned for this year: the ‘Teammate Experience Update,’ and a fall update that Ubisoft is keeping secret for the moment. Age of Empires developers ‘have not forgotten about Age of Mythology’

Ahead of Saturday’s Age of Empires fan event, Microsoft arranged a roundtable interview with developers from Xbox Game Studios and the current developers of the Age of Empires series at Relic Entertainment. While the interview was mostly focused on the upcoming Age of Empires 4, another game came up—2002’s Age of Mythology, a spin-off that traded AoE’s more grounded history for Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythology. Someone asked if Mythology would ever get the Definitive Edition treatment given to all three Age of Empires games. “I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: I have not forgotten about Age…

The most popular adult game on Patreon is being made by someone who’d never played one before

Only one of the top five projects on crowdfunding website Patreon isn’t a podcast. A videogame called Summertime Saga is currently ranked number three by number of patrons (it has 29,000), sitting below True Crime Obsessed and Chapo Trap House. Like all the videogames doing well on Patreon, it’s an adult game: a dating sim/visual novel that earns over $74,000 per month. The surprising thing is that its creator, who goes by the pseudonym DarkCookie (DC for short), didn’t have any experience with adult games before he started making one.  “I had no idea that type of content really existed,…

Forget zombies, Gunfight is still Cold War’s best mode

In spite of the painfully slow march towards the release of Warzone’s new map, Cold War has seen a steady stream of updates since it released in November. Weekly updates keep its playlists feeling fresh, and we’ve been drip fed new maps and weapons through generous seasonal updates. It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the midway point between Cold War’s release, and the next Call of Duty game. More recently, we’ve seen its Zombies content spiral through the Dark Aether across several maps, jam-packed with Easter eggs and well-hidden secrets. At this point, it feels like zombies really are…

Epic will lose over $300M on Epic Games Store exclusives, is fine with that

To take on Steam, Epic Games has spent the past two years shoveling Fortnite money into the Epic Games Store, making over 100 exclusivity deals and giving away free games every week. We knew Epic was spending a lot of money to get customers onto its store, but didn’t have many specifics until now. Thanks to Epic’s big legal fight with Apple, we learned this week that Epic committed around $444 million to Epic Game Store exclusivity deals in 2020 alone. Phew. More precisely, that’s $444 million on “minimum guarantees” for games that release on the Epic Games Store but…

Crapshoot: The edutainment game about designing your own dinosaurs

From 2010 to 2014 Richard Cobbett wrote Crapshoot, a column about rolling the dice to bring random obscure games back into the light. This week, a game two hundred million years in the making. No, wait. Sorry. A few months, maybe. One year tops. Is it kinda neat though? You bet Jurassic is! Dinosaurs! Next to fluffy, sleepy kittens, officially the greatest animals of all time. Big! Dangerous! Much more intimidating before we found out about the feathers, but thought raptors were actually like the ones in Jurassic Park! Designasaurus—technically Designasaurus 2—is your chance to put your stamp on history,…

Here’s how to watch the Age of Empires 4 fan event on Saturday

On April 10th, Microsoft is hosting an Age of Empires Fan Preview livestream, showcasing new footage from Age of Empires 4 as well as updates to the other games in the Age of Empires series. It should be a good time—especially since we haven’t seen much of AOE4 since way back in 2019. “Our broadcast will include a new look at gameplay, civilizations, campaigns, and more” for Age of Empires 4, says the official site. “We will also be sharing some exciting news for our Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition players, as…

Elon Musk’s neurotech company wired up a monkey to play Pong with its brain

Neuralink, a neurotechnology company co-founded by Elon Musk in 2016, has unveiled its latest breakthrough: a monkey that can play Pong with its brain. In the first half of the video above (via The Guardian), the monkey in question, a male macaque named Pager, manipulates objects on a monitor using a joystick, motivated to continue playing by the flow of a banana smoothie. This, according to the narrator, is actually part of the calibration process, which mathematically models “the relationship between patterns of neural activity and the different joystick movements they produce.” Later on, the joystick is unplugged, yet this…

The Day Before gameplay trailer shows 10 minutes of zombie shooting and farmhouse looting

We first got a glimpse at The Day Before when its announcement trailer appeared back in January. The “open-world MMO survival” game looks like it’s part DayZ, a smidge The Last of Us, and a bit of The Division thrown in for good measure: explore, scavenge, shoot zombies, and battle other players for resources in cities in the post-apocalypse. Today you can see a bit more of The Day Before. IGN has an exclusive new trailer showing about 10 minutes of gameplay, which you can watch above, and instead of the city we saw in the announcement trailer, this time…

The best Warzone guns

What are the best Warzone guns? Most firearms will see you through the early game, but you’ll need a powerful weapon for when the competition heats up later on. Impressive stats are important, but it’s also worth experimenting with different guns to select the best fit for your playstyle. With over 60 weapons to peruse, finding ten builds that are worth the price of a loadout drop can feel daunting. So, I’m here to help you choose wisely. Here are the best Warzone guns and how they fit into the Season 2 meta loadouts.    These are the best guns…

The best G-Sync monitors in 2021

The best G-Sync monitor will extract the smoothest gaming experience possible from your Nvidia graphics card. Nvidia G-Sync tech started being added to monitors in 2013 and is still the best solution around today.  But what does G-Sync mean, anyway? Essentially G-Sync is Nvidia’s frame synchronisation technology, which involves dedicated monitor processing that reduces screen tear and display stutter. Your monitor’s refresh rate will attune with your graphics card’s output for a much smoother gameplay experience. You’ll need an Nvidia graphics card to take advantage of this tech, and these cards are pretty elusive right now.  You’ve probably seen gaming…

Twitch may now ban you for ‘serious offenses’ that take place off the platform

Harassment, abuse and other serious misconduct may now get you banned from Twitch even if none of it occurs on the streaming platform itself, according to new guidelines laid out this week. Twitch’s off-service policy had previously taken into account misconduct that spilled over from the platform into other forums—a Twitch spat that continues on Twitter or Discord, for example. But Twitch has now introduced plans to tackle “serious offenses” relating to the Twitch community, even if none of the incidents happen on Twitch itself. The guidelines cites examples of the kinds of severe (and overwhelmingly criminal) misconduct that’ll get…

D&D game Solasta: Crown of the Magister will exit Early Access with its next update

We won’t be able to call Solasta: Crown of the Magister the other RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition currently in Early Access for much longer, as developer Tactical Adventures has announced that the next update will bring it to version 1.0.  Solasta has been in Early Access since October of 2020 with regular updates adding features like the Dungeon Maker, which lets players design their own adventures. Though the Dungeon Maker will remain in beta when Solasta’s Early Access is done, version 1.0 will come with the full campaign and extra side quests, a level cap of…
