PC gaming UK deals to expect on Amazon Prime Day 2021

Amazon Prime day is happening a lot earlier than last year, settling back down to its traditional June spot as opposed to the Black Friday aperitif it was in 2020. It’s still running across two days though, with Monday June 21 and Tuesday June 22 being this year’s Amazon Prime Days. As usual, we’ll been running the rule over what’s worth your time and money when it comes to Amazon Prime Day PC deals, but it’s not just going to be Bezos’s besties shipping the bargains. There will be a host of other retailers looking to cash in on the…

Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t leave Early Access this year ‘for sure’

It’s been a while since we heard from Larian Studios regarding Baldur’s Gate 3. There have been several hotfixes to the in-development RPG in the last few months, but the last substantial update was in February, when the druid class was added. Now, in a video interview with GameSpot, studio founder Swen Vincke has confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be leaving Early Access in 2021. “We are really trying to get the game done by next year,” he said. “It’s not gonna release this year for sure.” The studio is currently busy improving what’s in Early Access and completing…

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ big Chains of Domination update goes live June 29

We’ve been waiting a long time for the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands update Chains of Domination. “It sucks that World of Warcraft’s next big update feels so far off,” our resident Warcrafter said shortly after it was revealed in February. But it’s not so far off now: Blizzard announced today that Chains of Domination will go live on June 29. Chains of Domination will open up a new subzone in The Maw called Korthia, City of Secrets, and thanks to an invasion by the four Covenants, players will be able to use their mounts and (somehow) disable the Eye of…

See Jack Sparrow in action in a new Sea of Thieves gameplay video

Rare announced during the Xbox E3 showcase earlier this week that Captain Jack Sparrow, the worst pirate you’ve ever heard of, will be coming to Sea of Thieves in its next big update. Today we got our first look at some actual gameplay in a new video teasing the upcoming Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life story campaign. The new adventure, playable solo or in a crew, begins with busting Captain Jack out of prison, which seems like a pretty natural place to start. From there, you’ll get an eyeful of the world’s greatest Pirate Treasure, which Jack has stolen,…

You can play demos of these 52 E3 games at Steam Next Fest right now

E3 is over for this year, but Steam has timed the next instalment of its games festival, now called Steam Next Fest, so you can immediately get your hands on demos of a large number of games across every showcase. Even if you try to play only the games shown off, you’ll likely have a hard time fitting it all in—most of the demos are only available until June 22— but this list should help you decide what games you absolutely have to try for yourself.  A Tale of PaperA side-scrolling adventure where you play a little paper person who…

Warzone red door locations: Here’s what we know

Want to know more about the Warzone red doors? With Warzone Season 4 kicking off, there’s plenty to look forward to. But aside from the usual fare of new weapons, operators, modes, and maps, the addition of some strange new doors are something of an enigma. The red doors were first spotted in the cutscene that ushered in the current and main Warzone map, Verdansk ’84, back at the beginning of Season 3 when they were used to send players back in time. So naturally, we’re all wondering what they do so here’s everything we know about the Warzone red…

Cryptominers grabbed 25% of all GPUs at the start of 2021

We all know that cryptocurrency mining is bad, not least because of its impact on us being able to buy graphics cards for the purpose they were designed for, i.e. gaming. Until now though, it’s been tough to actually put a number on how many GPUs are ending up in professional mining rigs.  Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has done some number crunching though and thinks it has the answer—25% of all GPUs sold in the first quarter of 2021 ended up chipping away at the crypto coalface. That’s approximately 700,000 high-end and mid-range graphics cards with around $500 million.  (Image…

Future Call of Duty: Warzone patch will make ‘sweeping balance changes’ to weapons and TTK

The latest patch notes for Call of Duty: Warzone Season 4 are up, noting the addition of a new limited-time event called Ground Fall, the Verdansk Resurgence Mini mode, Verdansk’s new “Red Doors” (rumored to be a new fast-travel system), eight new LGBTQIA+ Pride flag Calling Cards, and a dirt bike. What’s most interesting though, is that underneath all this Raven Software explains what it’s planning for a patch that’s still to come: “In a future patch, we will be making sweeping balance changes to Weapons.” As the notes go on to explain, “Due to some Weapons being far more…

Next Fest has officially kicked off and Steam is teeming with indie demos, gaming livestreams, and developer chats. This six-day digital event is taking place between June 16 and June 22, giving you a week to browse and download a bunch of indie game demos for free. There are literally hundreds of demos (over 500) available to download, and they span a variety of different genres. It’s pretty overwhelming how many there are, which is why the PC Gamer team has done the work for you. We’ve delved deeply into the Next Fest list and have reemerged with 14 demos…

How a meme of Gandalf holding an AK-47 inspired survival sandbox Wizard with a Gun

“This is pretty much the image that started it,” says Patrick Morgan, whose title is “Business Doer” for Galvanic Games. The picture is of Gandalf holding an AK-47, a meme that inspired Galvanic to name their upcoming co-op survival sandbox “Wizard with a Gun.” A meme of Gandalf packing heat isn’t the very start of it, though. Galvanic (back in 2016 it there were just four of them) had been playing a lot of Klei’s Don’t Starve Together, and were kicking around the idea of a game about “gritty, western-style wizard gunslingers whose bullets came out in the form of…

PUBG’s first full-sized map since Miramar is dropping next month

Next month, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is getting its first full-sized map in almost three years with the addition of a new arena, Taego. Announced as the first of two new maps last month, Taego (formerly Project Tiger) is the first 8x8km map to be added to PUBG since Miramar, the very first map to be added to the game post-release. Since then, PUBG has added a fair few arenas, but they’ve been smaller—forcing players into more compact 4×4 and 6×6 battlegrounds. More interesting than scale, however, is that Taego will supposedly introduce respawns to PUBG for the very first time. Popularised…

The no-shows of E3 2021

This year, some publishers gave everyone a heads-up in advance about games that wouldn’t be shown at E3, a way of deflating the hype before it could spiral out of control. We knew not to expect Hollow Knight: Silksong, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, The Division: Heartland, Hogwarts Legacy, or Call of Duty: Vanguard. Same with Dead Island 2, Saints Row, Metro, or TimeSplitters. We didn’t expect to see The Elder Scrolls 6 either, given that Bethesda would be concentrating on Starfield (though fans are convinced a hint about it snuck into the trailer anyway), or games that are likely to…

PC Gamer’s Best of E3 2021 Awards

Some of our Best of E3 2019 Awards are funny in hindsight. We said that Elden Ring was exciting, but didn’t put it in the list because we’d only seen a “pretty cinematic.” Meanwhile, we did include Cyberpunk 2077 (decent, but not everything we hoped for), Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 (delayed indefinitely, quality TBD), and Empire of Sin (we gave it a 49%).  That’s how it goes sometimes: E3 awards are expressions of curiosity and surprise, a way to put a spotlight on games that got our imaginations going. Things don’t always turn out how we hope they…

11 years overdue, UFO2: Extraterrestrials is finally out on Steam

The year was 2010 when we wrote on Facebook that the sequel to the turn-based strategy game UFO: Extraterrestrials, which “came oh-so-close to reproducing the X-COM magic, falling short mostly due to what must’ve been a painfully small budget,” was expected to be out by the end of the year. It missed that mark, badly, and was eventually bumped to early 2012. And then, nothing. I think it’s reasonable to say that once most games are overdue by a decade, there’s a natural tendency to write them off, as Redditor Yonzy did. “I was looking forward to this game for…

Where to find alien artifacts in Fortnite

Fortnite Season 7 is here, and though the battle pass features a ton of cool skins (including Rick and Morty’s Rick Sanchez), only one of them allows you to customize it with over 2,000 possible combinations. Kymera, the initially purple-skinned alien invader, is one of the early skins available in the Season 7 battle pass. He’s essentially your guinea pig to mix and match different kinds of facial features, skin tones, and armor colors. You’ll need alien artifacts to unlock his different customization options, though, and that’s where the challenge comes in. The artifacts are simple purple canisters with a…

Wildermyth review

If you’re interested in narrative, there’s a theoretical game you’ve already dreamed about. It’s an impossible fusion of deliberately crafted stories and pure systems-driven anecdotes, all lending themselves to stories of your own like procedurally generated bricks. Wildermyth is that game. It is real. And it is wonderful. This tactical RPG imbues your every fantasy adventurer with life, turning dynamic character hooks and subplots into people you recognise and cherish. Funny and thoughtful and painfully mortal people. Campaigns start with a few randomised heroes defending their home. They’ll mean nothing to you at first, in their opening fight. Just a…

The Forgotten City is a quietly horrible story about sin and surveillance

A couple of hundred years ago, the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham dreamt up an enormously unpleasant method of using architecture to stamp out anti-social behaviour. Bentham called for prison cells to be built around shielded watchtowers, or “panopticons”, from which guards could monitor prisoners unobserved. He argued that the pressure of living under steady scrutiny, rather than punishments in themselves, would slowly mould each prisoner into a model citizen. Best of all, Bentham suggested, there doesn’t have to actually be a guard in the panopticon for the panopticon to ‘work’. After all, the suspicion of being spied on is often…
