UK Rocket League players win RLCS Apollo Open EU Regional Event with Team Queso

Team Queso – featuring two UK Rocket League players Joyo and rise and Frenchman Vatira – won the RLCS Apollo Open EU Regional Event last weekend. They beat Dignitas 4-1 in the final after a tournament full of big wins. Spanish organisation Team Queso had a perfect group stage, with three wins and zero losses in group B, putting them first ahead of Misfits and Dignitas. Record numbers of university students took part in the Winter 2021 season of Amazon University Esports in the UK and Ireland, which is run by NUEL and GGTech. More than 1,150 teams of students from 105 universities around the UK and Ireland competed weekly against each other in a range of esports games, including League of Legends, Valorant, CSGO and Overwatch. That’s up from 900 teams the year prior, with signups for the Valorant tournament more than doubling year-on-year. Rix.GG releases main Valorant ‘Thunder’ roster with no plans to find a replacement, women’s team remains unaffected

UK esports organisation Rix.GG has announced it is pausing its Valorant ‘Thunder’ project for the foreseeable future. Thunder was Rix.GG’s Valorant first team which had takent part in the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT), Icebox tournaments and more. Rix.GG said that while it won’t be looking for a replacement roster, it remains “committed to finding its place in the Valorant professional scene” and to its “mission of promoting inclusion and diversity in esports”. UK esports organisation LDN UTD are celebrating after securing passage to the first Valorant EMEA Challengers event of the year. They defeated Excel Esports 3-0 in the closed qualifier lower bracket final on the weekend to qualify for Challengers Stage 1. Excel will be disappointed after failing to qualify, after falling 3-1 to G2 in the upper bracket final then losing 3-0 to LDN UTD in the lower bracket final. UK-based esports organisation Excel Esports has signed Slovenian League of Legends support player Mihael ‘Mikyx’ Mehle to its LEC team. Mikyx is an experienced player who achieved solid success with G2 in recent years, having won MSI in 2019, reached the finals of Worlds 2019 and won several LEC/EU LCS seasons. Prior to that, he played with the likes of Misfits, Splyce and Fnatic. ESL and Faceit acquisition criticised over Saudi Arabia government ownership

Two major esports tournament providers, ESL and Faceit, have joined forces under controversial circumstances. They willl now be owned by Savvy Gaming Group (SGG), which is 100% owned by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund – its government’s Public Investment Fund. Savvy Gaming Group has acquired ESL from Modern Times Group (MTG) for $1.05bn, and has purchased Faceit for a reported $500m. SGG is headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The move – first reported by Handelsblatt – has been criticised by pockets of the esports community for Saudi’s human rights record. “He will be forever missed” – tributes paid to Scottish Unreal Tournament legend Paul ‘astz’ McGarrity

Paul ‘astz’ McGarrity, one of the UK’s top original Unreal Tournament (UT) pro players, has sadly passed away. He played UT 2004 competitively and also Quake Live for the likes of Dignitas back in the day. Paul also previously provided consultancy around gameplay and game mechanics in FPS (first person shooter) games. He was also a product manager for Play2Improve and its FPS Trainer product. European esports organisation G2 Esports has launched its own PFP NFT project and gamified social club known as ‘Samurai Army’. An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a unique digital asset (usually an image or a piece of digital art), with the buyer receiving a digital receipt saying they own it. NFTs can be bought and owned and re-sold, usually for cryptocurrency. A PFP is short for a profile picture. UK casters have joined the talent line-up for a new Thunderpick Bitcoin Series, a new tournament series with a prize pool in Bitcoin. The Thunderpick Bitcoin Series is an online event that started on January 17th 2022 with a closed qualifier, and the CSGO tournament will run until March 7th. Other CSGO and Dota 2 tournaments within the Thunderpick Bitcoin Series are also expected to run later in the year.
