The biggest upgrade I made this year was a robot desk

2020 was my upgrade year. I swapped monitors and went ultrawide for the first time, 3440×1440 @ 144 Hz. On Black Friday I got a $180 SATA 2TB SSD. And after completing a series of rituals involving toad blood, I acquired an RTX 3080.  Yes, it’s nice hitting my head against the 144 fps ceiling in Control and other games. But my biggest upgrade turned out to be bamboo. I knew I needed to change my work and gaming space in 2020. I was already working from home before the pandemic hit, but losing the option of lugging a laptop…

Fresh Hollow Knight: Silksong details come out of Edge

Our rivals and/or colleagues over at Edge Magazine have gotten an exclusive look at Hollow Knight: Silksong for Edge 354, which goes on sale today. Actually you know what they got to look at this before us so I’m going to officially come down on the rivals side of this—at least for the rest of the year. Team Cherry has blessed Edge (curse you, Edge!) with a look at the Hollow Knight sequel, which stars the character Hornet from the first game as she explores the new world of Pharloom. Game co-directors Ari Gibson and William Pellen revealed a lot…

Intel Chipset Shortage Is Real: Some Boards Could See Price Hikes

Chinese media outlet MyDrivers recently reported that Intel’s B460 and H410 chipsets are out of stock and could ultimately result in increased motherboard pricing during the first quarter of 2021. We’ve consulted with our own industry source, confirming that a shortage of lower-end chipsets is taking hold.  It’s no surprise that the hardware industry is in a rough place right now, and consumers are the ones to suffer. Now, adding to the pain of the ongoing shortages of graphics cards and AMD processors, Intel’s B460 and H410 chipsets might not be far behind. To make matters even worse, PCBs and…

Graphics cards in 2020: It was the best of years, it was the worst of years

It was the best of graphics tech, it was the worst of graphics tech, it was the age of unprecedented gen-on-gen performance bumps, it was the age of marketing foolishness, it was the epoch of affordable 4K gaming, it was the epoch of $1,500 GPUs, it was the season of ray tracing, it was the season of arbitrarily not enabling ray tracing, it was the summer of great new graphics card hope, it was the winter of empty shelf despair. Basically, in terms of new graphics cards, this year has been great… and then turned absolute dog eggs. This ill-fated…

Akasa has announced the industry’s first fanless chassis for Intel’s NUC 9 Compute Element platform. The Turing QLX will enable enthusiasts and PC makers to build quiet systems using Intel’s gaming-oriented NUC 9 Compute Element modules.  Intel and its partners brought the first NUC 9 Pro/Extreme Compute Element modules and supporting cases to the market in Q2 2020. But at the time, none of the chassis could offer passive cooling, as reckoned by Liliputing. In late December, Akasa finally announced the industry’s first fanless chassis for Intel’s NUC Compute Element platform. (Image credit: Akasa)The Akasa Turing QLX is a sub-7L chassis that measures…

The best game you missed in December 2020: Suzerain

As 2020 goes kicking and screaming into that good night, we’ve rounded up some of the best games from the year that we didn’t end up covering. Check the Best Game You Missed tag for more. December has provided a bounty of games at the long-awaited death of a hideous year, but its greatest and most unexpected treasure is already clear to me. Suzerain is the modern successor to Hidden Agenda, an ancient political simulator I once described as “possibly the greatest political simulator ever made”. A fictional nation still bleeding from civil war has just overthrown a dictator, and…

James Davenport: Cut out the noise around all the odd Kojima-isms, the myth of the nonsensical two-hour long cutscenes, the needless cameos and indulgent winks at the camera—it’s all there, and I like it, but it made up a miniscule percentage of my 100-plus hours wandering the American wastes.  What’s important: Death Stranding is one of the best games about getting from point A to point B ever made—looking at you…

That, my friends, is cheap. So, like last year, I went trawling through the terrible search systems of the online PC game platforms to find you some sweet deals. Are they the newest games? Intel Confirms On-Package HBM Memory Support for Sapphire Rapids

In a document released a couple of days before the New Year, Intel confirmed that its upcoming Xeon Scalable processors based on the Sapphire Rapids microarchitecture would support on-package HBM memory. A memory subsystem featuring HBM will significantly increase the bandwidth available to the CPU compared to a subsystem that uses conventional types of memory, like DDR4 or DDR5, meaning that future CPUs could resemble today’s GPUs with a healthy amount of HBM memory riding on the same package.  HBM Support ConfirmedRumors have emerged in recent months that suggested that Intel might enhance its Sapphire Rapids with HBM memory support. In…

That information may have been leaked as of December 25th. At the moment, Koei Tecmo believes no critical information such as credit card details has been stolen. Intel Alder Lake PCIe 5.0 Configuration Reportedly Detailed In Coreboot

Alder Lake won’t just be the first to bring an x86 hybrid architecture to desktops; the processors have also been pegged to leverage the high-velocity PCIe 5.0 interface. Coreboot (via Komachi_Ensaka), an open-source substitute for UEFI, seems to contain valuable information on the potential PCIe configuration that we could see on Alder Lake. Early rumors claimed that the 12th Generation Alder Lake processors would support both the PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 standard, and Tim Wawrzynczak’s assessment of the code seems to confirm that. However, the code specifically references Alder Lake-P (ADL-P), so it’s uncertain if the same setup will…

Tiny microphones became a real big deal in 2020

As I reflect on 2020, I’ve been giving some thought to what my hardware highlight of the year was. I tried to think about the conversations I had throughout the year that stuck with me. PC Gamer Hardware Awards: What is the best graphics card of 2020?

With performance-related components, such as graphics cards, the latest hardware is always the best. It’s faster, more powerful, and therefore, y’know, just better. Inevitably then, our best graphics card list is dominated by the new generation of GPUs AMD and Nvidia have unleashed upon the world in 2020. With both the red and green team releasing a swathe of high-end graphics cards over the last three months or so, 2020’s GPU game has been weighted very heavily towards the end of the year. That means the landscape has changed dramatically and incredibly quickly. Or at least it would have done…
